If your watch has a leather wrist band you should make sure to remove your watch every night and while you bathe to allow the leather to breathe. Wipe it down with a damp cloth once a week to keep it clean.

When wearing a watch with a leather wrist band leave it loose enough so that you put your pinky in between your wrist and the watch. This is to leave room for air to get in and evaporate moisture which can remove the natural oils form the leather. It is also recommended to remove it when swimming or at the beach as tanning oils, sunscreen and chlorine can damage or discolor leather.

To throughly clean leather watch bands remove them and make a mixture of equal parts water and baking soda. Rub the mixture on to all sides of the leather and let it sit for an hour.

Wash the baking soda mixture off and let the band dry over night before putting it back on the watch.

If there is a boot, tack or leather store in your area get some saddle soap and work it into the leather to restore it’s natural luster. If you can’t find saddle soap a few drops of olive oil can be substituted. Before putting anything on a light colored wrist band try it on an inconspicuous part of the band to make sure the color is not affected. Next just polish with a clean dry cloth and your leather watch band should look good as new. You can then clean the watch housing with a slightly damp cloth to remove any smudges.

Even a rubber watch band will need some care and maintenance to stay looking good. Just like leather, tanning oils, sunscreen and chlorine can deteriorate a rubber wrist band. At the very least after going swimming or applying any sunscreen or the like you should rinse the band off.

To get your rubber watch band completely clean simply get a soft bristled toothbrush and some warm soapy water. Use a mild soap like baby shampoo or odorless colorless hand soap. Simply scrub your watch band clean taking care to not get the main housing wet if you haven’t removed the band form the watch.

To deal with hair line scratches on the crystal by rubbing a small amount of non-abrasive toothpaste over it. Be careful to not get it into the small areas like where the crystal meets the bezel as it will be very difficult to get out. Wipe it clean with soft damp cloth and buff dry. You can repeat this if necessary.

He sold his watches from Italy to Scandinavia by way of England, his chief market. After Louis Brandt’s death in 1879, his two sons Louis-Paul and César, troubled by irregular deliveries of questionable quality, abandoned the unsatisfactory assembly workshop system in favour of in-house manufacturing and total production control. Due to the greater supply of manpower, communications and energy in Biel, the enterprise moved into a small factory in January 1880, then bought the entire building in December.

The economic difficulties brought on by the First World War would lead him to work actively from 1925 toward the union of Omega and Tissot, then to their merger in 1930 within the group SSIH, Geneva. Under his leadership, and from 1955 that of Joseph Reiser, the SSIH Group continued to grow and multiply, absorbing or creating some fifty companies. By the seventies, SSIH had become Switzerland’s number one producer of finished watches and number three in the world.Weakened by the severe monetary crisis and recession of 1975 to 1980, SSIH was bailed out by the banks in 1981. During this period, Seiko expressed interest in acquiring Omega, but nothing came out of the talks. Switzerland’s other watchmaking giant Allgemeine Schweizerische Uhrenindustrie AG (ASUAG), principal manufacturer of ébauches (unfinished movements produced for a range of other Swiss watch assemblers) and owner of the Longines and Rado watch brands, was similarly saved a year later.

After drastic financial cleansing and a restructuring of the two groups’ R&D and production operations at the ETA complex in Granges, the two giants merged in 1983 to form the Holding ASUAG-SSIH. In 1985 the holding company was taken over by a group of private investors under the strategy and leadership of Nicolas Hayek. Immediately renamed SMH, Société suisse de Microélectronique et d’Horlogerie, the new group achieved rapid growth and success to become today’s top watch producer in the world.
